Address by our President Dr David Hiep Phan

Dear Colleagues,

Subject: Annual General Meeting Announcement and Call for Nominations

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. As the President of the Australian Vietnamese Health Professional Association-Vic (AVHPA-Vic), I am delighted to announce the much-awaited Annual General Meeting (AGM) of our esteemed organization. After years of grappling with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and enduring multiple lockdowns, it is time for us to reunite, reconnect, and reinvigorate our collective efforts towards advancing the health sector.

The AGM and GALA ball will be held on Saturday, 14th October 2023, at Winsor Hotel, 111 Spring St, Melbourne VIC 3000. This event holds great significance for all of us as it presents a platform to reflect upon our accomplishments, discuss pertinent matters, and set the stage for an even more impactful year ahead. It is my earnest request that you mark this date in your calendars and make every effort to attend. Your presence and participation will contribute greatly to the success of this gathering and foster a sense of unity among our dedicated health professionals.

Prior to the GALA ball and dinner, we would have a series of Medical Education Sessions from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. These sessions will feature interesting and relevant topics tailored to the needs and interests of our members. We believe that these educational sessions will provide valuable insights, enhance your professional development, and foster a culture of continuous learning within our association. More details about the topics and speakers will be provided closer to the event.

Furthermore, I am excited to announce that nominations are now open for a new administration, as well as for individuals interested in joining our current committee. This is an excellent opportunity for you to actively engage in shaping the future of AVHPA-Vic and influencing the direction of our organization. Whether you have a wealth of experience or are a fresh face with new ideas, we welcome your enthusiasm and dedication to contribute to the betterment of our community.

We strongly encourage all eligible members to consider nominating themselves or nominating their esteemed colleagues for positions on the AVHPA-Vic committee. Serving on the committee offers you a unique chance to make a lasting impact and foster meaningful collaborations within our vibrant community.  During the AGM, we will also review the progress made over the past year, discuss upcoming projects and initiatives, and gather feedback on how we can better serve the needs of our members. This is a valuable opportunity for you to voice your opinions, share your insights, and actively contribute to the growth and success of our association. We value your input and believe that your expertise will enrich the discussions held during the meeting. We sincerely hope to see you at the Annual General Meeting, where we can reconnect, share our experiences, and collectively renew our commitment to serving the community. Let us rise above the challenges we have faced, harness our collective strength, and create a future marked by progress, innovation, and collaboration.

Thank you for your unwavering support, dedication, and continued contributions to AVHPA-Vic. Together, we will overcome obstacles, drive positive change, and build a stronger healthcare network for all.

With warm regards,

Dr David Hiep Phan

Dear colleagues,

Northern Health is inundated due to the unprecedented wave of Covid-19. They are desperately looking for GPs who can help and work from home.

Dear Colleagues and the AVHPA team,

The Western hospital, along with Victoria University are developing a phone app for patients who have been referred to the orthopaedic unit outpatients for management of their orthopaedic condition from their GP.

As you know, the waiting time for a new appointment to be seen in the outpatient department can take some time and so this app has been designed to link the patient to the hospital service at an early stage, prior to their appointment. They can download the app at any stage. The app is still in development and as the Western hospital has a large Vietnamese patient cohort, we are designing the app from the ground up to cater specifically to the Vietnamese community.

We are seeking interest from Vietnamese GP’s for their valuable input into designing this app so that it contains information relevant to our patients. The GP’s often get asked a lot of questions that the specialists do not get asked and hopefully we can incorporate this into the app. I would like to get together a small group of GP’s to work with us in helping develop this app to make it as user friendly and relevant to the Vietnamese patient population in our area.

Remember this is a work in progress so we all have the opportunity to chip in and change things to make it better before it becomes widely available. Please contact me if you would be interested in this project and I can set up a Zoom meeting with everybody to discuss further.

Regards,

Mr Duy Thai (Orthopaedic surgeon)
